How do you deliver bad news like a pro Product Manager?
Do you also feel frustration when, as a Product Manager, you are the bearer of bad news about failures and delays? How can it be done in the least painful way for both parties?
Well, no one likes to bring news of delays and scope limitations, but unfortunately it’s on the Product Manager’s shoulder to update on the development status, for better and for worse. As a lot of company relies on new releases (marketing, sales, account managers, support staff, etc) frequent, clear, and honest communication is a must. This way the situation from the meme presented is less likely (but not impossible) to happen.
So, how do you deliver bad news in the best way possible?
• Update as soon as possible — Delaying will only make things worse. The more time the other parties have to react, the better. If you fear their reaction, provide the update ASAP while feeling scared.
• Don’t sugar-coat it — Trying to wrap the message in confusing corporate jargon or pretending that the issue is for the best will only further confuse and anger other parties. Say as things are and let’s move on to find a solution together!
• No blame game — Maybe the development team didn’t deliver what they promised and PM had nothing to do with it. No one cares…
