Are you like me and allowed yourself to simply deliver features rather than focus on generating value to your users? Where does it come from? How to prevent it?

Let’s start by saying that it’s a misconception as old as time: We, the Product Managers, are not meant to simply imagine and deliver features! It is much more than that! It’s about strategic thinking that leads to providing the best possible solution to the given problem.

So, how come we fall into “delivering features for delivery’s sake”, or so-called “feature factory” or “feature rush”? More importantly, how to prevent those scenarios?

1) Too many goals
Multiple, conflicting goals can overwhelm a Product Manager (PM). While founders can set many goals, it’s crucial to balance challenge with feasibility. PMs must recognize when expectations are too high and communicate the need for prioritization.

Solution: Use the “rule of three” to focus on a few key goals, ensuring quality and progress. Be vocal when the goals are set and highlight the risks associated with too many goals. Maybe a Northstar goal is all your product needs?
